How to: Create Marijuana Cooking Oil

We’re now excited to teach you how to make Marijuana Cooking Oil from start to finish. You can use this Oil to make almost any types of food. Since most food requires oil, your possibilities are endless! Anything from pancakes and brownies to chicken fettuccine can be used with this marijuana oil. As a bonus, we’re also showing you how to create brownies with the Oil you just created. Let’s get started…

Step 1: What you need:

Gather your ingredients and utensils. Make sure you have at least 3 hours committed to your decision to make cannaoil. The process takes patience and time in order to achieve great results. You’ll need vegetable oil, medium size sauce pan, spatula/spoon, grinder, nylons, container for final oil, and of course, some medical marijuana.

Notes: If possible, use a strong grinder like a Magic Bullet. Also, if you don’t have nylons, you can use regular coffee filters.

Step 2: The Basics:

The math is pretty simple; just keep in mind that for every 1 gram of marijuana, you will ADD 1 ounce of vegetable oil. This makes the average level potency of the Oil equal to the amount called for in all recipes.

Notes: Decide on the amount of oil you want to make. Unlike butter, oil will stay good for a long time and doesn’t have to be stored in a refrigerator. It’s best to make batches of Oil big so that it lasts a few months. If you try this ratio and aren’t satisfied, up the amount of marijuana used.

Step 3: Grind and Combine:

Grind your Marijuana. Try to get it to as fine of a powder that you can. Using a coffee grinder will definitely do the best job. Next, combine your powdered marijuana with your pre-measured oil. In this example, we’ve mixed 28 grams of marijuana with 28 ounces of vegetable Oil.

Notes: Optional step: to start the process of oil and THC bonding, set aside the oil and marijuana mixture and let it sit overnight. The reason we heat the oil later on is for the heat to act as a catalyst in the bonding. Heat is not technically needed from my experiences with a no-bake method. By letting it sit overnight, you are jumpstarting the bonding of the oil and THC which helps cut off excessive cooking time for the oil.

Step 4: Add to Sauce Pan:

Now it’s time to add the mixed marijuana and vegetable Oil into a medium sized Sauce Pan. Be sure to get all of it into the pan to keep from wasting any Oil.

Step 5: Cooking Time:

Begin heating your oil mixture on a low setting. You want to achieve a below-boil point to avoid losing THC in evaporation. It might take a while to find that exact heat setting, but once it’s steady, you can leave it alone for the duration of cooking. Stir occasionally (every 15 minutes or so). Let it cook for 2 hours on low heat.

Step 6: Time to Strain:

Now it’s time to Strain. This process gets a little messy if you want every drop of the oil you just made. Begin with securing the nylons around the top of the container you want to use for your oil.

Now that it’s securely attached, it’s time to filter the Oil.

From here, simply scoop the cooked oil into the filter with a measuring cup.

Remove the Nylon filter.

After all of the oil has filtered, squeeze the rest out left in the nylon tube of marijuana.

Step 7: You’re Done!!

That’s it, you’re done!! Now you have some perfectly good and medically beneficial oil to use in a variety of recipes!

These pictures are amazing! I like the amount of detail with little to read.

    Best article yet!

I would like to know what you think about using a crock pot to make the oil and how long do you think it would take on low temp maybe 6 hours or so?

  3. Martha Stewart Martha Stewart says:

Julie- I have never attempted using my crockpot for oil, but I have heard it works nicely. I would suggest trying it with a small amount(1/4 oz green, 7 oz oil) and seeing how it works out. Good luck & happy baking!

  4. Daniel Boone Daniel Boone says:

You give 1g/1oz as the ratio. How negotiable is that? If I add more marijuana, what’s the threshold amount when the oil will not be able to bind any more THC? (I understand this depends on the quality – let’s say we’re talking skunky, but not super-skunky.)

  5. Martha Stewart Martha Stewart says:

Daniel- I am no where near a chemistry expert, but I’ll give you some real life examples to help figure this out. I have used 7g for a pan of brownies before, with 1/2 cup of oil. Almost double the green for oil(it was a 7g:4oz ratio), and they were very VERY potent. As for the taste, it was a little funky, not the delicious brownies I like. Basically, this ratio gives you a pleasant trip for the average serving size. It’s better to eat more of something yummy that doesn’t taste like weed than to choke down a potent brownie that tastes like tar and tree.

As for the threshhold, I really can’t say. I would go for the side of caution to not waste any THC, and lowering your oil ratio might jeopardize that. I have no idea if I wasted any THC in my potent brownies. If you’re really looking to up the pot to oil ratio, I would say 2 g/1 oz would be safe.

Ask away, Martha is here to help = )

I would never waste weed making cooking oil.
I would buy a vaporizer, or build a vaporizer.

Or I would extract the oil from the plant without mixing it with anything else. One hit of oil that is properly extracted from a bud, will keep you high for hours. Yes one hit.

If you are a heavy smoker, like more than 5 joints a day, you might need as many as 3 or 4 hits. And it will last for HOURS. I would say 4 to 5 hours.

When is the last time you smoked 3 hits and was high for 5 hours? Don’t waste time making crap from weed. Vaporize or extract PURE oil. Anything else is like sucking a titty through a nightgown. Just doesn’t cut it.

  8. Thanks for sharing this helpful info!

A vaporizer is a great way to ingest your meds. (my fave) the best way i’ve ever made the oil was with the crock pot. on most the low heat setting is plenty warm. let it go for at least 6hrs. i usually do about 12 when i do mine. I have the advantage of being a medicinal caregiver. i use just the nicest THC covered trim.
I use a ratio of 2 grams per ounce of oil and have great results.

so i plan on heating 7g’s of mids in 1/3 cup vegetable oil for 1hour stirring occasionally will this be good?

  14. Bob Marley Bob Marley says:

I usually just grind up 7-14 grams of good grade sensi. Put that into a liquid measuring cup. Pour oil as to cover the herb about a half inch over it. Pour into a pan and lightly simmer it for 45-90 mins. An hour is all you really need. If you get a really heavy green odor while youre cooking, lower it. Ideally you want to barely be able to smell it. Although everywhere you read they say it stinks up your whole house. Well thats because youre burning your product and burning off about half of its potency. peace n pot.

I’m currently experimenting with making single serve doses of oil. I’ve been using a muffin tray so I can test multiple different combinations at once.

Currently 2g kind bud per 2 oz of oil seems to be the best. I put the muffin tray in a preheated, 275F oven. You absolutely NEED an in-oven thermometer – I like to place mine right on top of the muffin tray – to get an accurate temperature.

275F for 2 hours have given me the best results.

Add a whole, crushed garlic clove – and any additional herbs – to each
slot for the last 30 minutes of cooking.

Allow the tray and oil to cool a bit. Place the tray on the table and serve with some nice Italian bread.

Makes a great appetizer. By the time you’re ready for dinner, you’re REALLLYYYY ready for dinner!!!

  25. Philarious Philarious says:

How much, if any, of the oil is lost in the process? When I make butter there is usually a quarter that is lost to evaporation and/or absorption with the weed.

  26. tigerfan tigerfan says:

what about using a double boiler? I do that for cannabutter but have heard that oil is better for extracting.
I burned a batch of cannabutter once & am still crying over that spilt milk, lol. Totally unusable :(

  27. Yo Momma Yo Momma says:

I recently quit smoking and decided to cook Mary Jane instead. My first time making the oil I used 7g’s of high quality weed grinding it to a fine powder then mixing it in 2/3 cup of canola oil and cooked it just below a simmer for 45min-1hr. The brownies I made with it only called for 1/4 cup of oil. When finished I ate two regular size brownies, I got so high I passed out in bed and woke up the next day still high lol

I’m still searching on new ways to cook with it and am loving it.

I am a little confused about ratios. I use 1g oil to 200g chocolate (not this kind of oil) This dose is for people who have problems with chemo, appetite and sleep. It works well. I think the oils have some toxic chemicals in them and that defeats the purpose of a harmless herbal med. Can anyone give me a gram amount of good quality cannaflour needed to 1 ounce of olive or other healthy oil to replace the 1g of pure cannabis oil.

  33. MJ MJ says:

This is a perfect ratio but 30 min is the max required for bonding. Anything more is in-fact wasted time.
